The ancestors of these birds were brought to Sweden sometime in the 1800s, probably from the East Indies. Birds of the original type are called Old Swedish Dwarf Hens and the "newer" type that is used for exhibition is called the Swedish Dwarf.

The Swedish Dwarf is found in both Wheaten and Brown (wild type). The Old Swedish Dwarf hen is only found in Brown. The roosters weigh in from 0.6 to 1.0 kg and the hens from 0.5 to 0.8 kg.

All the pictures are presently only of the newer form.

This bird is not related to the Olandsk Dwarf, although both are Swedish breeds.
