Harlequin Duck

Histrionicus histrionicus

Harlequin Ducks along the shore of Victoria, BC -- all the pictured birds are males

This lovely little sea-duck winters along rocky shores but moves inland for breeding. The Pacific population ranges from Siberia to western North America, while the Atlantic population breeds in eastern Canada, Iceland and southern Greenland.

They feed mostly by diving, tho' they will up-end or dabble in shallow waters.

More Harlequins along Victoria, BC -- again, all males
